If you are using a hardware USB-to-Serial port adapter to interface to your radio (versus a virtual serial port built into the actual radio) then you may need to experiment with several of them from different manufacturers as some of them can be very flaky (particularly the cheaper models which may use counterfeit chipsets).

Try updating the USB-to-Serial port drivers as they may well be what is causing your system to crash. Please help! Has anyone had problems with Fldigi crashing with Windows 7? As soon as I click Tx the program locks up. I have tried all sorts of rig control options and duplicated the exact settings on my Mac, but to no avail. I installed the latest version of Fldigi and it locks up every time click the Tx button. With no configuration, it works perfectly with the WSJT J65 software. I am using a Signalink USB into a Kenwood TS-480SAT. I didn't reinstall Windows, but the previous owner did a nice job of cleaning all their crap off of it and all the bloatware is removed. I've been wanting to tinker with a number of ham radio/PC projects and it seems I am going to need a non-Apple PC in the ham shack. I finally broke down and picked up mint condition $200 Windows 7 Craigslist Sandy Bridge i5 6gb 750gb 17" Dell laptop to make my hamshack PC.
It's been an uphill battle (love OS X, but the available ham radio software & drivers are a bit lacking), but I have managed to make it work thus far. I have been using a Mac for most computer related aspects of ham radio.
